Recap: Election Night in the District

It's one of those nights that for the rest of our lives, we'll say, "Where were you?" Well, you already know where I was...live blogging from Busboys & Poets on 14th and V and I couldn't have picked a better place.

Blogging and bottles! What better way to spend Election night! :)

The jumbo tron aired CNN all night and all night we were on pins and needles. I even caught myself biting my nails although the actual race to 270 wasn't a nail biter with Barack Obama in a clear lead for most of the night.

When CNN finally flashed,"CNN Projects Barack Obama President-Elect," the entire backroom erupted in chant, "YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!" We banged on the tables, we popped bottles, we clinked glasses...this was a celebration. This was OUR celebration (one to tell the grandkids!) I even saw the kitchen staff come out, banging pots and pans. Forget food...this was history! :)

Who would have known that the real party was going on outside. With a light mist cooling us off (everyone's blood was pumping with the news of our new President-elect), you could hear drummers (I think it was just people beating on trash cans and other hollow objects), chants and screams of "YES WE CAN!" in the streets. The police shut down most of U Street for all of the excited Obama supporters. Over 90% of DC residents voted for Obama. With the streets closed, it gave us plenty of space to cry, shout, dance, laugh and take pictures to record this moment forever!!!

Between texting my mother, friends and loved ones I couldn't help but fight back the tears. My president is black....(and white too) but he's black!!!! If there is anything that screams progress and change it is Barack's win last night. I'm still overjoyed...and the rest of the District is too. I can feel the excitement in Farragut Park, (with people shouting to me Obama! and Yes We Can! at the sight of my Obama button) right around the corner from the White House and I can see the relief.

I mean, I'd much rather work around the corner from Obama than McCain. We did it y'all. Congrats! :)

It's nothing but screams and excitement inside Busboys as the polls just closed in 10 states, including Maryland. Of ourse he's won MD and DC!

Live Blog: Election Night at Busboys & Poets

I'm inside at the press table, pretending I'm 'real press' sitting next to all my 'real press' friends who work at NPR and Discovery.

The line is down the block outside of Busboys and Poets on 14th and V Streets NW. The door is harder to get into than a party at Tuscana West and you can't get in right now unless you're with press.

If you're an Obama supporter this is the best place to be. With spirited supporters in the back room, yelling and screaming at the talking heads up on the overblown screen showing CNN; it's crazy.

I'll be live blogging all night from Busboys...so far I've terribly disappointed with the results. McCain, McCain, McCain...I feel like this is just God's way of testing us.

Let's pray for change! :)

MD Election: Question 2

I'd be remiss if I didn't give my two cents on one of the most controversial points on the Maryland ballot, Question 2.

Question 2 will decide if Maryland should bring over 15,000 gambling and slot machines to the state. And although many commercials (or propaganda as it should be correctly called) have been pushing for slots in order to improve our public school system, which is in dire need, let's keep it real: slot machines will bring money into the state but will that money really be allocated to improving our schools? Probably not...

I'm not sure if many of you remember as most of us were too young to vote on it at the time (I know I was) but when the Lottery first came to Maryland, politicians promised that the revenue would go to improving our schools but they haven't.

I'm not saying that broken political promises are a future indicator of what is to happen if slots were to be added to the state's constitution but it is something to think about.

Where would these slots go? It makes sense to place them in the top gambling zip codes, which includes 21215 (Baltimore City), 20743 (Capitol Heights) and 20748 (Temple Hills). These areas are also number one in foreclosures and have high crimes rate (which zip code doesn't though...).

Mini Recap: Dinner at Current Sundays

If you're not exhausted from your weekend (like most people are on Sundays) head to the District that never sleeps. Tucked away on a familiar block on Connecticut Avenue is a spot called Current (1215 CT Ave. NW). On this block, we're used to the likes of 1223, Lucky Bar (am I the only person who's been here?! lol) or even Play Lounge but Current is much swankier than any of these. You've heard me promote it before but I honestly could never make the trek into the District on a Sunday night...until last night.

In an effort to get people in the doors, they've opened up Sunday nights to what they like to call a 'dinner party'. It would be a perfect spot to dine if the menu offered more of a variety. Still, if you like sushi, you'd like Current because that's the only thing on the menu. Oh and the bartenders can make a good cocktail (and yes, my apple martini was great!)

After hours (around midnight or so), the party people came, taking Current from being a lounge spot to a club. I'll admit I left a little early before the real party started...a girl needs to recharge for the week (especially this week, which will be excittttting in the District!! GO VOTE!)

Go check it out for yourself next Sunday. It's swank, classy...nice. Just wish they had more to eat!
